I’m Back In The Office

Mini OfficeNo, don’t worry, I am still retired! I’ve just moved things around and created a mini office for myself, upstairs.

The room that the battery and inverter has gone into is little room, barely big enough for a single bed. When Mum was with us, it served as her bedroom for when she came to visit; she had a wardrobe and drawers with clothes and stuff, so if she wanted to come up, she could just jump on a train, without the need for a suitcase.

After Mum died, I gutted the room, as it had been hers. The built-in cabin bed was disassembled, and the wardrobe and drawers went to a grateful freecycler. I then refurnished it as my office. I worked from home almost all the time by then, and it was my office for about 10 years.

In 2019, I got cellulitis, and was instructed to recover at home with my leg elevated. I bought a nifty over-chair table, and worked from my recliner for a couple of months. Afterwards, rather than return to my little box-room office, I set myself up in the conservatory, recently kitted out with a new insulated roof. This proved to be successful and pleasant, looking out over the garden, while I worked. The only reservation I had was having to tidy the computer away when I had friends round to play games. But that problem disappeared when the first of the COVID outbreaks hit the UK, in 2020. No more gaming.

I continued to work in the conservatory, and eventually disassembled my home office upstairs. Having gone up there a few times, I found being cooped up there depressing.

After I retired, I have been trying to get the house in a good state for hosting games and music again. But I still found I needed to use my laptop – my tablet wasn’t enough. So I set up a “temporary” table in my living room, which has been that way (and spreading) for over a year now.

So I wanted to return downstairs to a (relatively) tidy living space. The box room had been sorted for the battery installation. I measure the spaces, and ordered a desk and chair.

And this is my new home office.

Although I found the room too small before, I am no longer going to be working up here all day, every day, and I can stop and go downstairs any time I want to.

I am hoping it is going to encourage me to spend more time on the laptop, doing things more substantial than a tablet can manage; blogging here and writing to Food Adventure, and perhaps restarting my Alexa skill hobby.
