Fit to fly

Those of you who know me personally will know that over the last 10 years I have had a serious weight problem.

A couple of years ago, I attacked this with a sensible (but not brutal) diet and exercise regime. Things went fairly well, and I started shedding the weight.

However, I have only just faced up to the fact that last year, when I was living in London and visiting mum in hospital, the diet went right out of the window – that is now over 9 months ago, and I still haven’t got back into my good habits. Although I keep resolving to start again, I haven’t put in the effort.

I have now weighed myself for the first time in about 6 months, and I am as heavy as I have ever been. I’m not going to share the data, but suffice to say I cannot currently use the Wii balance board!

So with my eyes firmly fixed on flying out to California next year in comfort, I am starting again today. I am going to do this in three ways.

1) Go back to daily exercise, and walk to the local shops no matter what the weather. The fact spring is here will help, as it is gardening time again. The moment I can get back on the Wii, do so, as I found that fun and it seemed to work.

2) Get rid of all the snacks which have crept into my larder over the last year – shop-bought biscuits and cakes. I am still going to allow myself anything that I bake for myself, as I can measure what is going into it (and also it is more effort than just opening a packet). That includes bread – no more shop-bought loaves, no matter how busy I am.

3) I am still convinced that my core diet (breakfast, lunch and dinner) is fine and not excessive, provided I exercise and cut out the snacks. When I make time to cook properly, the meals I produce are generally healthy and nutritious, and I know by experience that starving myself achieves nothing. However, I am going to continue with regular organic vegetable and fruit deliveries as it encourages me to shift my diet in a generally healthier direction.

If I can lose 1-2lbs a week between now and next March, I will be a happy man.
