A Wicked Birthday

For the past couple of years, I have celebrated my birthday by doing a show in London with my mum. This year we were joined by my brother, Steve (who has a birthday 6 days later) and his wife Sue.

This year’s show was Wicked, which tells the story of the Wizard of Oz from the witches’ point of view – in particular the "Wicked" witch Elphaba.

I am sure I will soon hear some dissent on this, but I felt the show was a little lacking in memorable tunes – with the notable exception of a couple of show-stopping numbers – "Defying Gravity" and "I’m Not That Girl". Otherwise, I found the songs perfectly acceptable, but relatively forgettable, showtunes – nothing that would have me singing on exiting the theatre.

Despite this, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Of the two songs mentioned above, "Defying Gravity" was excellently staged, and a brilliant end to the first act. My favourite song of the show was "I’m Not That Girl", together with its reprise in the second act.

Hmm. Now that you mention it, when and I went to see it we also quite enjoyed it, but you’re right — I don’t have any specifically vivid recollections of the songs. But we did enjoy the show thoroughly.
